The Monthly Review spotlights a different URACer each month in a Q&A. This month it's Steve Krehbiel, URAC's I.T. Manager and Information Security Officer.
TMR: When did you start at URAC and what brought you here?
Steve: I started in January 2012. I originally worked as a contractor and was excited to join as an employee in May of that year. Everything is very different now, but I’m happy to work with such a great team.
TMR: What were you doing before you came to URAC?
Steve: I worked for Community Services for Autistic Adults and Children as the one-man I.T. department. I had no budget. If I needed something, I had to convince a director of another department to give me money for it.
TMR: Describe yourself in three words.
Steve: I need coffee.
TMR: How do you like to spend your leisure time?
Steve: My favorite place to be is actually away from most technology out on the Potomac River, or backpacking. This weekend I plan to visit Dolly Sods Wilderness with some friends.
TMR: What’s your favorite restaurant?
Steve: I don’t really have a favorite, there are so many near where I live. If they have outside seating with shade and decent beer on tap, that’s a big bonus.
TMR: What do you like to watch?
Steve: I’ve been enjoying Better Call Saul, the prequel to Breaking Bad. I think The Wire is probably my favorite show.
TMR: What kind of books do you like to read?
Steve: I like history books, especially audiobooks. I just finished "Guns, Germs and Steel" and "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich".
TMR: What's your favorite vacation spot?
Steve: Some would argue that wasn't actually a vacation because of all the hard work involved, but Burning Man was my favorite. I arrived a week early to help build the infrastructure for a camp for 140 people. It was hard work. 95 degrees during the day, 35 degrees at night, and dust storms almost every day. That sounds terrible, but it was a great time.
TMR: Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Steve: Both. I grew up with a dog, but now my wife and I have a cat. I love dogs, but my cat doesn’t need any input from me if she needs to use the restroom at 3am.
TMR: Tell us something about yourself that most people at URAC would not know about you.
Steve: I can’t think of anything. I think you all know me pretty well by now.
